Module 3 - Returning with Confidence
Returning to the workforce after a gap

This final module, we will discuss what you could encounter when asking for accommodations.

Asking for Accommodation

Asking for accommodation is always a little nerve racking, even for those who have a lot of experience doing so. When you are new at a job, you want to do as little as possible to draw attention to yourself in a negative way. Needing and asking for accommodation aren’t negative things, they are part of being in the workforce. You don’t necessarily need to have a disability to need an accommodation. Think of coworkers who have ergonomic workspaces so they can work comfortably. A disability accommodation is no different.

Don’t shy away from asking for accommodation because you’re worried you will be flagged as demanding and difficult.

Listen to Samantha’s experience about being afraid to ask for accommodation.

As you just heard, Samantha ended up having a very positive experience. You have to make the asks and allow your employer the opportunity to provide you with what you need.
