The accommodation process can be ongoing. You may begin with addressing certain needs with certain accommodations but then find they need to be modified to work better. Communicate this to your new employer to ensure they understand that accommodations really depend on the day-to-day situations you’ll find yourself in as you work on your tasks. Some people may believe that an accommodation is a one-and-done type of transaction. It is important that both of you approach the issue with a mindset of “try, refine, try again.” This process often requires regularly scheduled conversations for the first several months.
In order to do your job adequately, you need to be able to do your job to begin with. Your employer may not be able to address every barrier or it may take them some time to do so but this does not mean you should stop asking. If you view yourself and your accommodation needs as a burden, so will those around you.
Be confident, be persistent and know your worth.
