Module 1 - Preparing to Return
Returning to work after a leave of absence

What to expect before returning

There are many concerns that you can help have when coming back from sick leave. If you’re dealing with a new disability you have to navigate not only your home life but now you work life as well. Below is a fictional example of a return to work scenario based on real experiences.

The scenario

You were in a serious accident that required you to leave work for 3 months. In order to take that time off, you had to talk to your human resources representative your manager and your insurance company. You are required to provide a doctors note, which estimates when you should be back at work. While you were off you are often thinking about your return date and you were worried you will not be ready to return to work by then but you are willing to try.

Players in your return to work process:

  • Your doctor
  • Your physiotherapist
  • Your manager
  • Your HR representative
  • Your work’s insurance company

Your accommodations upon returning are that you can only work 25 hours a week, you cannot work on the computer 100% of the time and you cannot be around bright lighting. This is all detailed in a note from your physiotherapist.
